Expanded HSUS Investigation of Cattle Industry
Uncovers Disturbing Treatment at Auctions
Clovis Operation Included in Undercover Video

The shocking abuse of "downer" cows occurs not just at slaughter plants but may be an everyday happening at livestock auctions and stockyards around the country—the midpoints between farm and slaughter—as shown in an expanding undercover investigation by The Humane Society of the United States. |
During April and May, undercover investigators from the Humane Society of the United States visited livestock auctions in Maryland, New Mexico, Pennsylvania and Texas and videotaped “downer” cows at each stop—animals unable to walk or to stand, left to suffer for hours—and in one instance, overnight.
"Downer" cows are too frail to stand on their own. They are frequently dragged and prodded by inhumane handling methods, which increases the threat of those cows carrying and passing disease if they enter the food chain. Federal law states that cows must be ambulatory in order to become part of the human food supply. A cow that is unable to walk itself into the slaughterhouse is not supposed to become hamburger.
In January, the HSUS released undercover video taken at the Westland/Hallmark slaughter plant in Chino, California. Visual proof of cruel treatment toward downer cattle at this plant created a national outcry for enforcement of federal laws to ensure a safe food supply, and for humane treatment of the animals.
The now infamous Hallmark video resulted in the recall of 143 million pounds of meat, much of which had shipped to the national school lunch program—and the closing of Hallmark’s doors.
“These new video images show that the rot in the factory farming system of raising animals goes much deeper,” states Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of the HSUS. “The problems are systemic, the laws and regulations are inadequate, and the industry's resolve insufficient."

La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department
Awarded Animal Rescue Equipment
Daring Dog Rescue Commended by APNM
Petey is a German Shepherd cross who was out for a hike with his guardian in the Jemez Falls area on November 10, 2007, when, in a flash, Petey ripped his leash out of his human’s hands as he dashed after a squirrel. The squirrel ducked into a rocky ledge overlooking a 50’ drop. Petey was moving far too quickly to stop himself, and he went over the cliff.
His guardian and onlookers saw Petey lying at the base of the cliff, not moving. A few people climbed down the cliff face to be with the dog, and cover him as he struggled to breathe. Someone else climbed high enough on the hill to call 911 for help.
Enter the La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department and the U.S. Forest Service, who collaborated on a two-hour-plus rescue effort to gently secure Petey to a litter and lift him from the cliff base. He was stabilized and treated for extensive injuries at an Albuquerque emergency clinic, and survived.
Animal Protection of New Mexico is proud to recognize the unflinching bravery in the efforts of Petey’s rescuers. The La Cueva Volunteer Fire Department was presented with dog crates and animal rescue equipment by APNM Executive Director Lisa Jennings on May 7.
A fully-recovered Petey was happy to also be in attendance.
