Animal Cruelty & Safety
Question: How do I report animal neglect or cruelty?
Answer: Contact APNM’s Animal Cruelty Helpline, 877-5HUMANE (877-548-6263). For help during holidays, check APNM’s “Who To Call” chart when you see an animal in distress.
Question: Where can I find help escaping domestic violence with my animals?
Answer: APNM’s Companion Animal Rescue Effort (CARE) provides financial assistance for emergency veterinary care and temporary boarding for animals of domestic violence survivors. Email CARE@apnm.org or call 505-533-CARE (505-533-2273) for more information.
Assistance for Veterinary Care, Spay/Neuter, and Animal Food
Question: Where can I get help for my animal’s medical emergency?
Answer: In an emergency, please call your veterinarian or the nearest available vet clinic.
Question: Where can I get financial assistance for my animal’s medical emergency?
Answer: Currently, there are no known programs for immediate emergency assistance. In an emergency, contact your veterinarian or the nearest available vet clinic for guidance and information about payment options for any upfront costs. There are statewide and national programs that may be able to assist with other vet care costs, including emergency costs that can wait several days for treatment/urgent care costs. Check The Oscar Foundation, The Pet Fund, and Red Rover Relief Urgent Care grants. These programs generally require an application process, and it may take several days before they are able to respond.
Question: Where can I find spay/neuter services for my animal(s)?
Answer: APNM’s New Mexico Spay/Neuter Resources Directory contains a thorough listing of low-cost and no-cost spay/neuter service providers.
Question: Where can I find financial assistance for spay/neuter services for my animal(s)?
Answer: APNM’s New Mexico Spay/Neuter Resources Directory contains a thorough listing of programs and organizations that may be able to offer assistance.
Question: Where can I find low-cost vaccinations and microchipping services for my animal(s)?
Answer: For those near Albuquerque or able to travel, the two least expensive clinics in the Albuquerque area at this time are VetCo and Express Vet NM. VetCo also has a location in Valencia County. The Santa Fe Animal Shelter’s Spay/Neuter and Wellness Clinic offers low-cost vaccinations. For other New Mexico communities, please call your local animal shelter or animal control office for referrals.
Question: Where can I find help providing food for my companion animal(s)?
Answer: Check with your local human food bank and animal welfare groups in your area for referrals. Roadrunner Food Bank’s Food Finder tool can help you find your local human food bank. APNM’s New Mexico Animal Resources Guide includes a thorough listing of animal welfare groups. It is available as a searchable online database and a downloadable PDF.
- If you are a veteran in the Albuquerque area, the Veterans Integration Center’s pet food bank can offer assistance.
- Valencia County residents can find help through HART (Homeless Animal Rescue Team).
- ACTion Programs for Animals operates a pet food bank for Doña Ana County
- The Animal Welfare Coalition of Northeastern New Mexico assists San Miguel County
Question: Where can I find help with feed assistance for my horse, donkey, or mule?
Answer: APNM’s Equine Protection Fund assists qualifying individuals with temporary feed assistance, gelding services, and humane euthanasia. Email epf@apnm.org for more information.

Question: Where can I find my local community’s animal ordinance?
Answer: APNM’s Animal Laws webpage provides a thorough listing of New Mexico city and county animal ordinances.
Question: Where can I learn more about state animal laws and pending legislation?
Answer: Please visit the Animal Protection Voters website at www.apvnm.org.
Question: Where can I find help with an animal-related legal issue?
Answer: APNM does not give legal advice or make referrals to attorneys.
APNM Programs & Speakers
Question: Where can I find information about humane education lessons or presentations?
Answer: APNM offers New Mexico educators its popular humane education program, The Animal Connection, in digital form. Answer: APNM staff members are subject matter experts on a wide variety of topics, including animal cruelty, animal law, animals in science, equines, humane education, The Link (between animal abuse and interpersonal violence), plant-based eating, wildlife, and more.
