We are thrilled to share the news we have all worked so long and hard for: the last transport of the 21 remaining chimpanzees from the Alamogordo Primate Facility has arrived safely at Chimp Haven. After decades in a laboratory setting, these individuals now begin their new lives in freedom, surrounded by forest, companionship, and care.
This day was never guaranteed, and this remarkable outcome was not accidental. It happened because people from every part of New Mexico—advocates, business leaders, elected officials, scientists, agency representatives, the media, and so many others—all refused to let these chimpanzees be forgotten. The many chimpanzees who are finally living their best chimp lives at Chimp Haven are proof positive that the collective actions of caring people really matter.
This is a moment of profound relief and deep pride. For three decades, Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM) and our allies stood with these chimpanzees through every setback, every delay, and every challenge. In short, we never gave up.
To every supporter who stood with us: thank you. Whether you wrote a letter to our Congressional members, made a donation, or simply refused to forget these chimpanzees, you helped change the course of their lives. This victory belongs to all of us.
