Common sense tips when in cougar country

Cougar Smart New Mexico, initiated by Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM), has developed trailhead posters, informative flyers, and waterproof safety tips tags for kids’ backpacks to help keep people safe when recreating and living in cougar country. This is a collaboration between APNM, New Mexico Department of Game and Fish, the US Forest Service, New Mexico State Parks, and Santa Fe County Open Space and Trails.

Common Sense Precautions for Coexisting with Cougars

Cougars (also called mountain lions, pumas, panthers, and catamounts) are one of the top native carnivores in New Mexico and help maintain the health of the landscape by keeping in check the grazing wildlife population.

Historical Involvement in Cougar Protection

For decades, cougar management in New Mexico has not been based on biological principles; this has resulted in archaic management practices, anti-cougar bias and excessive cougar killing.
