Horse Shelter Rescue Fund & Tax Checkoff

In 2013, with leadership from Animal Protection Voters, the New Mexico legislature created the Horse Shelter Rescue Fund (HSRF) within the New Mexico Livestock Board, the first and only source of state support for licensed New Mexico equine shelters. Shelters provide an essential service for our state by taking in surrendered, abandoned, neglected, and abused horses, donkeys, and mules with no other place to go, and who may otherwise be sent across the border for slaughter. Click here for a current list of licensed equine shelters.

Money from the HSRF helps fund equine shelters through monetary appropriations by the legislature and voluntary contributions from caring citizens of tax refunds.

Use your state tax refund to help equines at licensed shelters and sanctuaries across New Mexico.

Download the 2022 PIT-D form and instructions.

Even if you don’t receive a state tax refund this year, consider contributing directly.
