Bernalillo County, NM—Animal Protection New Mexico is offering a reward of up to $3000 in the case of a pit bull puppy found dead in a crate near 118th St. NW next to a trail on the West Mesa outside Albuquerque, NM.
On May 28, 2018 around 6:45 pm, Bernalillo County Animal Care Services responded to a caller reporting a dead dog in a crate on the West Mesa. The officer arrived to find a deceased “Blue” (grey) male pit bull approximately 5 months old, with white markings on his chest, stomach, and tips of both rear feet. According to Bernalillo County Animal Care Services, both puppy and crate smelled strongly of parvovirus. Food bowls were found in the crate and the puppy had no collar or microchip. Bernalillo County Animal Care Services Director, Misha Goodman, has no leads or suspects, but is investigating.
“The first step is to find out who left this puppy out on the Mesa,” said Goodman, “so we are asking for tips from the public. The information they provide could help paint a clearer picture of exactly what happened.”
Animal Protection New Mexico Cruelty Case Manager Alan Edmonds noted, “Companion animals rely on their guardians to care for them. No matter what the circumstances, it’s always cruel and illegal to abandon a live animal. It’s also a crime to improperly dispose of a deceased companion animal. There are many options available, even for people who can’t afford to cremate their deceased companion.”
Information leading to the arrest and prosecution of those responsible will be rewarded up to $3000. If you have any information regarding this case, please call Animal Protection New Mexico’s Animal Cruelty Hotline: 877-548-6263. Callers may remain anonymous.
