Equine Protection Fund: Equine Care Support for Shelters and Government Agencies

Currently available to equine rescues licensed and inspected in New Mexico, and to government and law enforcement agencies, including tribal governments, in New Mexico. This financial assistance is to help support necessary emergency veterinary care and/or treatment of equines who have been abandoned, abused, neglected, or surrendered, with the goal of preventing further suffering from cruelty and/or unrelieved pain without treatment. Other types of community-level assistance for equines to government agencies may be available depending on funding.

All applications will be reviewed and considered; however, this equine care assistance is not intended to cover routine veterinary care, core vaccinations or typical hoof care. Eligibility is determined on a case-by-case basis at the discretion of APNM. If you have any questions or requests about special cases, please call us at (505) 803-3770 or email epf@apnm.org.

Due to budget constraints, we are currently not able to cover gelding and humane euthanasia expenses for equine shelters. For financial assistance with these procedures, we recommend applying through Horse Plus Humane Society: https://horseshelternetwork.org/resources/ We are still considering applications for other necessary emergency veterinary care for equine shelters.

Directions: Please complete this form and submit. You will generally receive a response to your submission within three business days or less, depending on the type of the request, and the documentation submitted. If you have any questions or difficulty with this process, please call us at (505) 803-3770 or email us. Due to limited funding, submission of this application is not guarantee of assistance. We may be able to pay or reimburse for a portion, or the entirety of the bill, depending on available funding and the total cost of the procedure.
