How to Donate Stocks/Securities
Thank you for considering donating stocks/securities to APNM or one of its associated organizations listed below!
Donations of stock can be an effective way to make a generous charitable contribution, and at the same time gain a tax advantage for stock that has appreciated in value. Please ask your financial advisor for more information about this option.
If the stock you want to donate is held with a brokerage firm:
You can simply ask that firm to “DTC” the stock to the appropriate account at Royal Bank of Canada (RBC), where our various investment accounts are held. The DTC process means you will be transferring the shares electronically. You or your broker will need the DTC number for RBC, and it is 0235.
Please refer to this list of our organizations to choose where you want your stocks donated:
- Animal Protection New Mexico (APNM)
- Animal Protection New Mexico Foundation (APNM’s Operating Endowment)
- APNM’s Humane Infrastructure Endowment Fund
- Animal Protection Voters (APV)
- Animal Protection Voters Endowment
As the donor, you will need to tell your broker the name of the stock to donate, the number of shares, and the place (from list above) where you want the stock donated. Please notify us (development@apnm.org) of your intent to give, and we will provide you or your broker with the correct RBC account number.
If the stock you want to donate is NOT held with a brokerage firm (i.e., if you hold a paper stock certificate yourself):
You can go to the nearest RBC office and sign the stock certificate over to the entity (APNM, APV, or APNMF) to which you want to donate the stock. Again, you will need to let the RBC office know where you want the stock donated.
If you have questions on anything, please email us at development@apnm.org.
Thank you for your kind consideration of a stock/securities donation to fuel our powerful and impactful work for New Mexico’s animals!
